It should come as no surprise that the number one goal of major movie studios is to turn a profit. While smaller studios will sometimes produce passion projects more for the sake of art than money-making, the major studios (e.g. 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros., Universal, etc.) are far more concerned with the bottom line. They want to make the next Avengers ($623 million at the domestic box office on a $220 million budget), not the next Fantastic Four ($56 million on a $120 million budget). They want the next Hunger Games ($408 million on a $78 million budget), not the next John Carter ($73 million on a $250 million budget).
