The Warriors, released in 1979, was an offbeat film that quickly emerged as a cult classic. Directed by Walter Hill, and based on a novel by Sol Yurick which was itself loosely based on Xenophon’s Anabasis, the film told the story of a group of rival gangs in 1970s New York City, with the title gang, The Warriors, having to fight their way home against such colorful criminal outfits as the Baseball Furies, the Gramercy Riffs, the Turnbull ACs and The Punks.
Very much a product of the violent and dangerous reputation of New York in the late ‘70s, the film also contributed the memorable chant, “Warriors… come out to plaaay…” The film has spawned multiple video games, the late director Tony Scott
