While Westerns used to be a popular movie genre, these days the “final frontier” of space has been big at the box office. Next year’s science fiction film Life hopes to join the ranks of recent space films that include the rebooted Star Trek franchise and the continuation of the Star Wars saga, as well as the Oscar-nominated Matt Damon flick The Martian, and the Oscar-winning Gravity, featuring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.
Life, much like the upcoming Amy Adams film Arrival, focuses on a first contact situation. At first it seems like a much more harmless meeting, however, as the crew of the International Space Station merely gets a sample from Mars of a single-celled organism. It’s a huge breakthrough for science, but it also creates a lot more dire conflict than whose name gets published first on the press release.
